Make Your Albuquerque Home More Livable

by Sandi Pressley

Now more than ever, your home is your haven. Or, at least, it should be. But is your home in Albuquerque really making you happy, or are there aspects of your place that are bringing you down? Little fixes can turn it all around.

Get some houseplants

Having plants around the house not only can lift your spirits, but improve your health. They're great for both mind and body.

Why are plants so beneficial? They essentially do the opposite of what we do when we breathe: release oxygen and absorb carbon dioxide. This not only freshens up the air, but also eliminates harmful toxins. Extensive research by NASA has revealed that houseplants can remove up to 87 per cent of air toxin in 24 hours. Studies have also proven that indoor plants improve concentration and productivity (by up to 15 percent!), reduce stress levels and boost your mood.

Put your stuff away

Having clutter laying all over can create chaos not only in your home, but in your mind. Studies have identified a direct link between the stress hormone cortisol and clutter. Cortisol is not just linked to stress. At elevated levels, it also causes depression. In addition, decluttering leads to eating better and improves air quality.

Paint something

Choose a wall, an old piece of furniture, or an entire room. It’s a manageable project you can do yourself and one that can totally change the energy of a space. Or, buy a canvas and create an art piece you can then hang in your home. "Creating art teaches you to be attuned with aesthetic of the visual world around you and makes you appreciate the beauty in and of life,” said Health Fitness Revolution. “You gain a new appreciation for the texture of a tree’s bark or the fur of a dog, of the various highlights and shadows playing on even the more bare of white walls. Embracing the beauty around you gives you a more positive outlook of the world and can even decrease the risk of mental illness.”

Make those little fixes

The burned-out light bulb 20 feet up in the living room. The broken drawer pull in the kitchen. All those little annoyances are stealing your joy. Pick a Sunday and attack them one by one, or make a list and check it twice and have your handyman tackle it for you.

Build a garden

Wouldn’t it be nice to grow your own veggies, or at least fresh herbs? Perhaps the best news about gardening is how it can make you feel, and not just when you’re eating what you have managed to grow. Getting your hands dirty in the garden can increase your serotonin levels—contact with soil and a specific soil bacteria, Mycobacterium vaccae, triggers the release of serotonin in our brain according to research. Serotonin is a happy chemical, a natural anti-depressant and strengthens the immune system.

Taking the time to make your home more enjoyable is worth the effort. Your home will truly be a haven where you can be safe and happy.

Home Maintenance Mistakes to Avoid

by Sandi Pressley

The way your home exterior looks makes a huge difference when you sell it. First impressions can make or break a sale.

Here are some home maintenance mistakes to avoid to keep your home looking fresh.

Stop Using the Pressure Washer at Full Force

When you pressure wash your home, the goal is to remove the dirt, not the paint. You can do this without setting the pressure washer to full force. If you don't, you could end up making your home look worse by damaging the paint or wood, along with forcing the water under the siding where it can cause rot.

Instead, turn the spray as low as it can go to still get the job done. Then angle the washer down, and clean with gentle, side-to-side motions.

Stop Putting Mulch Against the House

Lining your home with mulch may look great, but it can increase the risk of bugs and mold. Instead, you can keep that great look by placing a layer of brick or stone between your house and the mulch.

Stop Storing Produce on the Counter

There's nothing more appetizing than bowls full of garden-fresh goods on the counter. But it comes at a price: bugs.

While fruit flies are annoying, ants and roaches are full-on worrisome once they're in your home. And they are TOUGH to get rid of. Refrigerate all the produce you can — and if you must keep it out to ripen, pop it in the fridge as soon as it peaks.

How to Get Your Family to Clean Out the Closets

by Sandi Pressley

Let’s face it – if you have kids, you have messy closets. The hustle and bustle of daily life usually doesn’t leave much time to organize. And living in a disorganized home can make you feel a bit out of control.

Organizing every closet in the house can be daunting.  But it you can get the family in on the project, you might be surprised at how much you can accomplish. What are some ways you can get your family to help?

Discussion

Talk about organizing the closets before you plan to start. It’s easier to get people to do things that they don’t want to do if you talk about it first and mentally prepare them.  And let your kids know that you’ll make the experience fun and rewarding for them. That will certainly put grease on the wheels, as it were.

Planning

Of course every project needs at least some planning to be successful.  Are the closets full of clothes your kids don’t wear anymore, or are out of season? Set  goals to clean out unwanted items and organize what’s left. Realistic goals are the key to success.  If you aim too high, it could lead to disappointment.

Rewards

Everyone wants rewards. Scheduling regular breaks is a great start.  You should also find a reward that keeps the family moving.  You know what your family loves to eat or do, so try to make that happen for them when they reach a goal. Keeping a positive and fun attitude will do wonders for keeping the project on the move.

Unwanted Items

You’ll certainly come across items you don’t need or want.  Don’t throw them away. Make a pile or put them in boxes to either donate or sell. If you have a Goodwill donation center nearby for example, you can get a coupon for usually 20% off an item bought from their stores, plus you can write it off your taxes. Of course there are a number of donation centers in Albuquerque you can give to. You can also try some consignment shops in Albuquerque to make some fast cash, such as 2 Time Couture and Your Other Closet.

Organizing your closets can actually be a rewarding experience for the whole family. It teaches your kids cooperation and organizational skills.  And it can be a fun time if you plan ahead.
